Who it's really for. Academic and nonprofit researchers working on scientific questions where a frontier language model is a genuine tool: literature synthesis, hypothesis generation, data analysis pipelines, code for experiments, and similar. Anthropic frames the program around high-priority scientific topics, and biology and health have featured prominently, but applications from other domains are considered. It is for research use of the API, not for classroom tools or organizational operations.
What you get. Free Claude API credits sized to the project, granted on a rolling basis. Because this is API access rather than seats, it suits teams that will build something (an analysis workflow, an agent, an evaluation) rather than use a chat interface. Anthropic also runs the periodic, larger Claude Science round with up to $30,000 per project when it is open.
How to apply and what to watch. The application is a short form; describe the scientific question, why a model helps, and how you will share results. Turnaround is generally quicker than quarterly-review programs. Nonprofits that want Claude for their staff rather than for research should apply to Claude for Nonprofits instead.
