Bias Bounty Mapping Equity Challenge

Zindi and Humane Intelligence (Heising-Simons)

A challenge piloting Humane Intelligence's Bias Scoring API, measuring open-map data coverage gaps across climate-vulnerable US communities and scoring submissions for equity, not just accuracy. Opens 28 Aug 2026.

Who it's really for. Data scientists, geospatial analysts, and civic tech teams interested in algorithmic fairness as much as in accuracy. This Zindi challenge is a pilot of Humane Intelligence's Bias Scoring API, so submissions are scored partly on how equitably they perform across climate-vulnerable US communities. Anyone with a Zindi account can enter; you do not need to be US-based even though the data is.

What you get. A share of a $10,000 prize pool, early exposure to a bias-scoring methodology that is likely to show up in future funder requirements, and visibility with Humane Intelligence and the Heising-Simons Foundation, which backs the work. For people building a portfolio in responsible AI, the framing of this challenge is the point.

How to apply and what to watch. The challenge runs from 28 August to 31 October 2026. Read the scoring rubric before you start, since optimizing for accuracy alone will not win here. Related open competitions are listed on the challenges page, and the Responsible Computing Challenge is a natural next step for academics working on AI ethics.
