Researcher Access Program

OpenAI

OpenAI's standing researcher-credit program giving qualifying academic and nonprofit researchers modest API credits for scientific or public-interest research, reviewed quarterly.

Who it's really for. Researchers affiliated with a university, research institute or nonprofit who need OpenAI API access for a defined project with a scientific or public-interest purpose: evaluating model behavior, building a research prototype, studying AI's effects on a population, and similar. It is not a program for commercial products or for general organizational use; nonprofits looking for operational tooling should look elsewhere.

What you get. Up to $1,000 in API credits, which is modest by design. The credits are meant to remove the barrier to a pilot or a paper, not to fund production workloads. The application is short and approvals are reviewed quarterly, so the effort-to-value ratio is good for small projects.

How to apply and what to watch. Submit the form on OpenAI's site with a concise research description; be clear about what the credits will enable and how results will be shared. Because review is quarterly, apply well ahead of when you need access. Researchers should also consider Anthropic's AI for Science program and AWS Cloud Credit for Research; the full set of standing credit programs is on the credits and compute page.
